Golf As a Family Game
A golf club in the baby's bassinet? Oh yes! That's exactly what I found when I brought my son home from the hospital almost 50 years ago. He was destined to play the game and he has played it quite well.
These days, we are enjoying watching the grandchildren learn to play golf. It is not at all unusual for us to have 3 generations on the golf course at one time. Grandfather, father and grandson all enjoy playing golf together. And then later, they discuss their game. If you are married to a golfer, or if you yourself play golf, you know that talking about the game is almost as much fun as playing the game. Hours and hours of family conversation revolve around golf stories. Everyone knows that the family that communicates and enjoys activities together builds stronger children.
We believe strongly that golf is good for children. Golf not only teaches discipline and social skills, but provides a fun outside activity for the whole family. Children learn quickly that it is important to follow the rules of the game and vital that they help care for the golf course as responsible players. Even the smallest golfer enjoys raking the traps.

Tips for You and Your Junior Golfer
Contact your local golf course. Junior clinics are affordable and a great way to introduce your child to the game.
Do not become your child's teacher unless you are a golf professional. As parents, it is our job to encourage our children and enjoy the game with them.
If money is tight your child can get by with fewer clubs to learn to play. A 6-10 year old really only needs a 3 wood, 5, 7 and 9 irons and a putter. Then if your child is still interested when he/she is 11-12 years old, you can purchase a complete set.
According to the Junior Golf Guide, "Studies have shown that children who have interacted with their parents in the early stages of life form a life-long bond. And it's this special relationship that gives your child the confidence they need to succeed in life!"
Remember - if you are having fun, your child will have fun, too!

Life Lessons from Golf
What does your child learn by playing this game? Golfers are known around the world for their kindness and good etiquette on the golf course. What a life skill!
- Safety rules - Where is your opponent? Other players should be at least 10 yards away from you before you swing.
- Respect for the game of golf, other players -Golfers are always polite, never rude.
- Integrity - Golfers write down their own score after each hole. Golfers who cheat on that honor system are ignored and do not make good partners.
- Take Care of the golf course -Young children can fix marks on the greens and rake traps. The important thing is that they learn the responsibility of the players in protecting the course.

I love that golf is a sport that you can play for a lifetime. I don't think may people are volleyball hitters or basketball point guards in their 60's and 70's, but there sure are a lot of golfers that age. Plus it is great for both boys and girls. Great hub and I love the pics!
