Whitey Adams and His Talking Watch

Tool for the Visually Impaired

A talking watch is a necessity for most, if not all, visually impaired people. Think about how many times a day you look at your watch or a clock. With a talking watch, my legally blind husband always knows what time it is. In fact, around here, we ask him for the correct time when we need to know!

When my husband lost his vision in 1988, we learned fast that the first thing we had to find was a talking watch. He was forever frustrated by not knowing the correct time. It took hours of telephone calls and trial and error purchases before we settled on the right talking watch for him.

Thankfully, with the internet, such a search takes only a few minutes today. The selection process is easier. We can quickly find >watches, choose from the ones with the options he requires, and order on line. What a relief!

I know how much Whitey uses his watch and think his endorsement of this product means a lot!

That makes sense. :)

Your husband seems to treat his watches the same way I treat my sunglasses. I leave them everywhere!! That is why I only buy cheap, disposable ones. No designer sunglasses for this gal! lol

Thank you, Janet. Whitey uses one of the less expensive watches. We buy 3 at a time! And those will last a year or more. We always take his watches to a jeweler and have his own watch band added to replace the plastic bands. A one button watch works best for him, and since he is a golfer and a very active person overall, it is simply less risky for him to use an inexpensive little talking watch that we can replace easily. He has been guilty of dunking watches in the swimming pool, or throwing his watch into his golf bag -- not good for digital products of any kind! lol

Great hub based on your personal experience with the products. I am glad your husband found a watch he likes. So, which watch did he end up purchasing? Maybe you could include the pros and cons of the watches you purchased during your trial and error period and why you ended up choosing the watch you did. This may help others in their search for the perfect talking watch. :)

Having a talking wrist watch for the visually impaired is really wonderful. As mentioned from GrowWear, the picture of Whitey looking at his talking watch is priceless!

I think a talking wrist watch would be a very handy tool for many people, not just the blind. It's great to have a testimonial from your husband, though, about how useful they are.

Hi, Joan. Stopped by to see your Talking Wrist Watch article. Indeed, very handy. Still get a chuckle with Whitey "looking" at his talking wrist watch. :)
